Yet another mysterious Conneaut Lake area fire

SUMMIT TOWNSHIP — Fire has damaged another home near Conneaut Lake Park — the fifth of undetermined origin in that area in recent weeks.

The fire along Reed Avenue in Summit Township was discovered at 1:24 a.m. Thursday. The heavily damaged two-story, wood-frame building is at 12687 Reed Ave. Ext. — across the street from the first two fires. It is across Route 618 from Conneaut Lake Park, about a half mile down Reed from the park.

The house was owned by Eugene Peters of Virginia Beach, Va.

Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal Kenneth Hamilton is investigating the incident, said Pete Albaug h, assistant chief for Summit’s volunteer fire department.

The owner of the home, whose name has not been reported, is from Pittsburgh, and no one was occupying the structure at the time of the fire, Albaugh said.

“It appears to be one of the string of fires we’re having,” Albaugh said Thursday afternoon. “I think it follows the pattern of the others, although this one did have utilities running to it, unlike some of the others.”

Firemen from Summit, Conneaut Lake, Conneaut Lake Park, Linesville, North Shenango Township, Conneautville and Vernon Central were called to the scene.

The last fire units returned to service at 6:59 a.m. Thursday.

Thursday’s blaze was the sixth fire in the Conneaut Lake Park area in recent weeks. The most recent fire before Thursday’s was ruled an accidental electrical fire by Hamilton. The other night-time fires were at abandoned structures in the area of Conneaut Lake Park. The causes of those fires all are undetermined at this point, according to Hamilton.
