The U.S. Air Force is expected to make an appearance at Saturday’s RoboBOTS competition with its own intricate piece of machinery, the Supercar X-1.
Designed with aspiring pilots in mind, this highly-customized product of a military recruitment campaign has the looks of a Ford Mustang on the outside and an F-16 cockpit on the inside, complete with sheet-metal interior, ejector seat and a flight control stick functioning as the shift lever.
“This is a recruiting asset we have that will be there just for the day of the event,” Air Force Staff Sergeant Michael Jarvis said.
The X-1 will be accompanied by a 38-foot trailer with interactive, touch-screen displays and information on the vehicle’s conceptual and mechanical origin as well as Air Force career opportunities.
Visitors can request Air Force and Supercar multimedia for their cell phones.
The seventh annual RoboBOTS competition, sponsored by the northwestern Pennsylvania chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association, is scheduled for Saturday at Meadville Area Senior High School. Admission is free. Doors open at 8 a.m. with competition beginning at 9.
