Crawford Central elementary school naming issue to be decided Nov. 19

VERNON TOWNSHIP — A decision on the official name of the building on the northeast corner of South Main and Linden streets in downtown Meadville, now known as “East End Elementary School at Second District Elementary School,” will be made during the board’s monthly meeting on Nov. 19.

During the board’s monthly work session on Nov. 12, the board will hear two five-minute presentations.

One group will present its case for allowing the school to retain the name it’s been known by since it was built in 1929: Second District Elementary School.

One group will present its case for giving the school a new name — and present a single recommendation of what that name should be.

That was the bottom line of the report Crawford Central School Board member Richard Curry gave to the board Wednesday during its monthly work session.

On Oct. 9, a group of approximately 20 concerned adults gathered in the library of the South Main Street school to discuss what the name of the school should be. “After one and a half hours, Mr. Heller (Superintendent Charlie Heller) and I decided that they would not reach a consensus,” Curry reported. At that point in the Oct. 9 gathering, it was suggested that the Second District/new name groups meet separately and present their recommendations to the school board, which is responsible for making the final decision.

Early in the summer, a group of parents living in the former East End Elementary School attendance area approached the board, requesting that a committee be formed to investigate the possibility of giving the school a new name in recognition of the major change that took place when the former East End Elementary School on Walnut Street was permanently closed and the district’s Meadville attendance area boundaries were realigned. Adults supporting the Second District name quickly responded; as a result, the Oct. 9 meeting was organized.

Those planning to attend the board’s November meetings should note that as a result of the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday, the board will meet on the second and third Mondays of November instead of the usual third and fourth Mondays.
