MEADVILLE —
Instead of repairs, the roof of the 4-H Dairy Barn at the Crawford County Fairgrounds will be replaced fully, according to the Crawford County Fair Board.
At its monthly meeting Thursday, the fair board authorized increasing the scope of the project from repair to replacement — if the total project cost can be held under $25,000 and the Crawford County 4-H Dairy Committee would provide $10,000 in funding.
Last month, the fair board approved roof repairs and an extension of its eaves at an estimated cost of $5,000. It was part of more than $100,000 worth of renovations planned to be completed prior to the 2013 Crawford County Fair, which is scheduled for Aug. 17 through 24.
However, the fair board Thursday opted to increase the 4-H Dairy barn project after Brian Myers of the Crawford County 4-H Dairy Committee recently notified Crawford County commissioners the committee was willing to help financially — if the roof was replaced rather than repaired. Crawford County government owns the fairgrounds and buildings, but the fair is operated by an independent, volunteer board appointed by county commissioners.
The project now will replace the roof, improve roof top ventilation and extend the eaves of the 4-H Dairy barn.
The fair board also reviewed a proposed draft horse barn on the fairgrounds.
Bids currently are being sought by the county for construction of a new draft horse barn measuring 22 feet by 102 feet.
At least eight companies have requested information on bid specifications so far, according to Anne Hall, the fair board’s recording secretary. Bids for the project will be accepted until 10 a.m. April 9.
The project would be constructed in time for the fair’s Aug. 17 opening.
