MEADVILLE —
If you’ve been kicking yourself for the last 12 months for being somewhere else when musician Frank Marzano transformed Johnny Cash’s classic “Folsom Prison” into “Folsom Daycare” and brought down the house during Kid’s Day 2011 at Second Saturday Community Market at Meadville’s historic Market House, relief is on the way.
From 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Marzano will return to the Second Saturday stage, transmogrifying popular songs into a whole new generation of kiddie classics before a giggling audience.
Saturday is the annual Kid’s Day at Meadville’s historic Market House — and its organizer is finding himself increasingly amazed at every turn.
“Kid’s Day is turning out to be something crazy,” said Dave Mosbacher, who coordinates the monthly transformation of the bricked plaza along the south side of the historic structure into Second Saturday Community Market featuring song, dance, arts, crafts, food and lots and lots of activities.
Let’s just say they’re pulling out all the stops.
Musically speaking, Marzano will be followed by Drew Danielson from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Simply Because from 1 to 3.
Beginning at 11 a.m., John Manders, illustrator of more than 30 children’s books whose work has also been featured in what he describes as “gazillions” of children’s magazines, will settle in under a tree at the western end of Market Square to read one of the books aloud. Then he’ll demonstrate how he does it by painting a likeness of one of the characters. He’ll also be signing and selling his books.
Educated at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Manders studied children’s illustration, animation and life drawing at the School of Visual Arts and Fashion Institute of Technology, both in New York City.
His most recent books include “Let’s Have a Tree Party” by David Martin and “Jack and the Giant Barbecue” by Eric A. Kimmel. Manders also wrote and illustrated “The Really Awful Musicians” and illustrated modern classics including “Fergus and the Night-Demon” by Jim Murphy, named one of the 2007 Bank Street Best Children’s Books of the Year, and “Harry & the Buccaneer Bunnies” by Carolyn Crimi, selected by both Scholastic and Junior Library Guild.
Meadville Council on the Arts has an unprecedented assortment of crafty surprises in store and rumor has it that Magic Steve may be talked into expanding his act beyond his ever-popular balloon sculptures.
In addition to 20-plus vendors whose offerings Mosbacher describes as “heavily weighted toward merchandise geared for children,” the ARC hot-dog stand will be in place in the plaza at the west end of the Market House.
Erie Clowns, who will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will begin their ever-puckering pickle-eating contest promptly at 1.
“It’s going to be kind of a wild one, I think,” Mosbacher said.
