MEADVILLE —
A chance to see manufacturing processes up close is being made available this week by the northwestern Pennsylvania chapter of the National Tooling and Machining Association.
An open house is scheduled Thursday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Kuhn Tool & Die Co., 373 Davis St., Meadville. The open house is free, but persons are asked to register by emailing info@nwpa-ntma.com or calling (814) 720-0094.
It’s the first in a series of open houses to showcase what is manufactured in Meadville. The local chapter hopes to have them twice a year.
“It’s a way to let people see what local tool shops and manufacturing in general are doing,” said Ken Kuhn, who is the current president of the local NTMA chapter as well as president of Kuhn Tool & Die.
The chapter will be hosting about 100 students from four area schools prior to the open house.
Kuhn Tool & Die Co. makes a variety of items used by other manufacturers and specializes in gages and fixtures used in the manufacturing of turbine blades and vanes.
“It’s a teaching tool for both parents and kids,” Kuhn said of the effort to have the open house. “We have high-tech equipment and we need people not only with mechanical aptitude, but math and science skills.”
Tami Adams, executive director of the local NTMA chapter, agrees the open house is a way to illustrate what tooling and machining is about.
“We want to show technology to people, how it’s used in manufacturing and how it fits into the world around us,” said Adams. “We have local companies making a lot of different products and do work for the aerospace, medical, consumer, automotive and other industries.”
Kuhn said the tooling industry needs more than just operators, but engineers, managers and other skill sets.
“We’re trying to showcase that we’re still here and have good paying jobs available and that we’re looking for people,” he said.
