MEADVILLE —
A Meadville man is facing more than 4 years in jail and almost $17,000 in fines after fleeing the scene of an early-morning crash in the City of Meadville.
Brandon Michael Babin, 24, of 736 Liberty St., Meadville, was arraigned early Wednesday morning by Vernon Township Area Magisterial District Judge Michael Rossi acting on behalf of Meadville Area Magisterial Judge William Chisholm on Meadville Police Department charges of three counts of driving under the influence, accidents involving personal injury while not licensed, accidents involving damage to unattended vehicle or property, driving while operating privilege is suspended, failing to give information and render aid, driving at an unsafe speed and careless driving and was committed to Crawford County jail in lieu of $30,000 bail.
According to police, Babin fled the scene of the crash on foot “without rendering any assistance to three persons who were injured as a result of the accident.”
All three passengers in the vehicle were treated at Meadville Medical Center for injuries, police said. Police did not release names or information about the condition of any of the passengers.
According to police, Babin was driving his car at a high rate of speed along State Street at 2:14 am. Wednesday after “imbibing a sufficient amount of alcohol that (he) was rendered incapable of safe driving” when he crashed the vehicle into front yards at 561 and 563 State Street, causing what police described as “considerable property damage” to both private and city property. At the time, Babin’s operating privileges were suspended; the criminal complaint also noted that he has three prior convictions for driving with his license under suspension.
If convicted on all counts, Babin faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five days in jail and a $6,375 fine.
Police were assisted at the scene by Meadville Central Fire Department.
