Resolution may be near in case of custodian for CLP fire department

Meadville Tribune

MEADVILLE — A court hearing on whether a Crawford County Court of Common Pleas judge should appoint a custodian to run the Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department instead of the current board of directors has been canceled.

That hearing was set for today at 9 a.m., before Judge John Spataro.

However, late Thursday, the judge issued an order canceling the hearing after being informed by attorneys that “the parties remain committed toward resolution of this case.”

On April 30, four Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department members, including its chief, petitioned county court to appoint a custodian to run the department.

Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department’s coverage area is mainly in Sadsbury Township on the west side of Conneaut Lake.

The firefighters’ petition has claimed questionable operations by the board of directors, including taking money out of fire operation’s restricted accounts to pay “club bills,” and failure to disclose financial information and other corporate records as required.

However, the two sides have been in negotiations throughout much of the month of August. A pretrial conference set for Aug. 15 was canceled due to ongoing negotiations.

Spataro has scheduled a status conference on the case for Sept. 24.
