MEADVILLE —
The Lake Effect Leaders, formerly known as the Children and Youth AmeriCorps VISTA Project of Northwest Pennsylvania, is accepting 2013-14 concept applications for organizations in Crawford and Erie counties interested in hosting an AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) member. The project is a collaborative partnership among Allegheny College, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, Gannon University and Mercyhurst University.
Since 2003, Lake Effect Leaders has enhanced the capacity of projects designed to improve the lives of underserved youth by giving them the developmental assets to overcome the obstacles created by poverty and to realize their potential. By matching higher education institutional resources with community needs, the program helps provide area youth with the experiences, tools and role models they need to imagine a life beyond poverty.
Lake Effect Leaders has recently added projects that build the capacity of community organizations to address economic opportunity issues that affect families, including employment, housing and asset development.
AmeriCorps VISTA, which has been addressing the needs of impoverished families since 1965, provides full-time volunteers to nonprofit organizations and public agencies to strengthen programs that bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
-To apply: Concept applications are available by contacting Erin O’Day-Frye at 332-5318 or eoday@allegheny.edu or by visiting the Nonprofit Partnership webpage at thenonprofitpartnership.org. Application deadline is Nov. 12.
