SAEGERTOWN —
For the fifth straight time, the Crawford County jail has received a 100 percent perfect score following a state inspection.
The Department of Corrections inspects all county jails, and Crawford County earned a 100 percent compliance with statewide correctional standards.
“There are no deficiencies or citations to report,” said a letter from Shirley Moore Smeal, executive deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, announcing the 100 percent rating.
The letter was read into the record at Thursday’s meeting of the Crawford County Prison Board by Francis Schultz, the county’s district attorney who serves as chairman of the jail board.
The DOC inspects county jails annually, but those that earn a 100 percent rating are inspected every two years. The Crawford County jail was last inspected in April 2010.
In addition to inspecting the building, DOC officials review records of inmates and personnel as well as determine that all policies and procedures are being followed. Reviews also are made to determine that all state rules and regulations are being followed. State inspectors also chose county jail inmates at random and questioned them about how the jail is run.
“Staff commitment to compliance is evident throughout the facility, allowing the facility to maintain an audit-ready status,” the letter stated. “Staff at the Crawford County Correctional Facility should be proud of their accomplishments and are encouraged to maintain this level of compliance.”
With the 100 percent compliance rating for 2012, Crawford County’s jail won’t have to be inspected again until 2014, according to the DOC letter.
Getting a 100 percent rating for a fifth inspection in a row was amazing, Schultz said to a Tribune reporter after the meeting.
“It shows the administration and employees at the jail are performing their duties at a very high standard,” said Schultz. “It’s evidence claims made by certain individuals to the contrary are false.”
The jail had come under criticism in the last few years that it was being operated improperly.
