MEADVILLE —
Students living within the boundaries of the new Second District Elementary School attendance area will either walk or ride to school, depending on which side of a one-mile radius from the school they live. Second District is on the northwest corner of the intersection of South Main and Linden streets.
The new attendance area was created following a late-April decision by Crawford Central School Board to close East End Elementary School on upper Walnut Street at the end of the 2011-12 school year.
According to Superintendent Charlie Heller, letters detailing the walking and busing zones are scheduled to be sent to parents in the Second District attendance area during the week of July 23.
According to a preliminary plan recently presented to Crawford Central School Board by Dave Dickson, the district’s supervisor of buildings, grounds and transportation, the walk zone roughly includes the area south of North Street from Water to Grove streets; Grove Street south of North Street; Chestnut Street west of the intersection of Chestnut, Alden and Porter streets; and the west side of Burns Avenue from Arch to Pine streets.
Within the Second District walking zone, crossing guards will be stationed at the intersections of Park Avenue and Willow Street; Washington and Clark streets; South Main and Linden streets; South Main and Poplar streets; South Main and Willow streets; Liberty and Arch streets; Liberty and Poplar; Liberty and Pine streets; Grove and Pine; Grove and Arch; and Grove and Chestnut.
According to Dickson, students in Second District’s busing zone will be asked to make their way to one of six pickup locations. The bus stops will be along Washington Street near Hartman Street and Graff Avenue; Clark Street at Davenport Street; Chestnut Street at Fairview Avenue and Morgan Street; and South Morgan Street at Pine.
Dickson also released a list of crossing guard locations for the First District Elementary School attendance area. First District is on the northeast corner of the intersection of North Main and Randolph streets.
Crossing guards will be stationed at North Main and Randolph streets; North Main and Baldwin streets; Park Avenue and Randolph; Park and Baldwin; and Spring Street and Baldwin.
Dickson told the board that the placement of crossing guards will be evaluated during the opening two weeks of school in consultation with Sgt. Mike Tautin, the City of Meadville’s school safety officer. Tautin directs the crossing guard and safety patrol programs for schools in Crawford Central’s Meadville attendance area.
