MEADVILLE —
Due to the severity of the flu season this year, Active Aging Inc. is hosting a special flu shot clinic on Thursday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Lew Davies Community Building, 1034 Park Ave., Meadville.
The event is open to the public, but because of limited supplies pre-registration is required.
With more than 11,000 cases of flu confirmed in Pennsylvania — regarded as “widespread” status by health officials — the situation is considered dangerous, according to recent reports. Centers for Disease Control and the Pennsylvania Department of Health recommend that at-risk population, i.e. pregnant women, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems, get annual flu shots for the most common strain of the virus this season.
On Monday, Titusville Area Hospital Infection Control reported seeing a marked increase of influenza cases and took immediate health-control precautions by putting an “inpatient visitor restriction” policy into effect until further notice.
The restriction means no visitors 18 years of age and younger would be permitted to visit inpatients (including in the Obstetrics Department); inpatients may receive visits from immediate family only; and all visitors are asked to check in at the nursing station before entering a patient room.
Northwest Pharmacy Solutions will offer influenza vaccinations at Active Aging’s Thursday session. There is a limited supply of the vaccine, and inoculations will be available to those who are pre-registered; they must be 18 years old or older and have not had a flu shot this season.
Those attending must bring proper identification for insurance billing. Cost for the vaccination is $25 if the person’s insurance does not cover the fee.
The shots are available on a first come, first served basis. To pre-register, call (814) 336-1800 today or Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m. Pneumonia shots will also be available at the clinic.
