MEADVILLE —
For the second time, U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Dominic Knapp of Meadville will be part of President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Knapp is part of the U.S. Air Force’s Honor Guard and will be ushering in persons to Monday’s ceremonies. However, he wasn’t at liberty to say much about his participation.
“Even though I know kind of what to expect, it’s very special because it (a presidential inauguration) happens only once every four years,” Knapp said in a phone interview Saturday.
In 2009, Knapp, a 2007 graduate of Meadville Area Senior High School and former captain of the MASH football team, was on hand as part of a joint service military cordon positioned along the route during Obama’s first inaugural parade.
Knapp joined the Air Force in July 2008 and was selected to become a member of the Air Force Honor Guard following interviews by Air Force personnel. He completed his Honor Guard training in mid-December 2008 and has been stationed at Bolling Air Force Base near Washington, D.C., since then.
After his inaugural responsibilities end, Knapp returns to duty at Arlington National Cemetery, where the Honor Guard participates in an average of three to five funerals per day.
Knapp said he will leave the Air Force when his enlistment term is up in July and plans to pursue a career in law enforcement.
He is a son of Chris and Kathy Knapp of Meadville.
