Channellock, union in contract talks

MEADVILLE — Members of the United Steel Workers union and Channellock Inc., the Meadville-based maker of pliers and other hand tools, are working on a new contract.

The previous two-year contract between Local 1917-3 of the United Steel Workers and Channellock expired at midnight Sunday. However, both sides agreed to an extension of the current contract until midnight Feb. 24 while talks continue.

When asked for details, “we can’t speak on it,” said Marc Johnston, Channellock’s director of work force development.

Johnston did confirm negotiations are ongoing and that there are “plenty of sessions the next two weeks.”

Tribune attempts to contract George Bryan Jr., president of Local 1917-3, were unsuccessful Monday. Tribune calls to Ed Kemick, USW staff representative in Erie, weren’t returned Monday.

The proposed contract covers 262 unionized workers at Channellock, the Meadville area’s largest industrial employer. It has about 360 total employees at two plants — South Main Street in Meadville and Route 102 in Vernon Township.
