Regional band musicians descend on Meadville

MEADVILLE — This year’s Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Region II Band festival, which features 160 student musicians and 55 band directors from northwestern Pennsylvania, will be held on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at the Meadville Area Senior High School auditorium.

The festival is hosted by MASH, led by director of bands Jill Manning, and Cochranton High School, whose director of bands is Carl Miller.

Among the participants are Cambridge Springs, Cochranton, Conneaut, General McLane, Maplewood, Meadville, Titusville and Union City high school students. More schools from Erie County and other areas in northwestern Pennsylvania are engaging in the event.

The guest conductor is Dr. Adam F. Brennan, who has been director of bands and professor of percussion studies at Mansfield University since 1995. Dr. Brennan is served as chair of the music department from 2001 to 2007. In 2008, he returned to full-time teaching duties as the director of bands and continues to coordinate the graduate and undergraduate instrumental conducting program.

The musicians arrived in Meadville on Thursday to audition for their chair/position in the band, as well as for the possibility of continuing on to the PMEA All-State Festival, which takes place from April 17 to 20 in Erie. The students who advance will have a chance to play in either the All-State wind ensemble or concert band. There are also All-State ensembles for chorus, orchestra, vocal jazz and jazz band being held throughout Pennsylvania.

The students began rehearsals Thursday night before they are picked up by local families with whom they will be housed for the duration of the festival. All 160 students are housed by local families who volunteer to accommodate two or more students.

Rehearsals will continue today at 8 a.m. and last until 9:30 p.m., with breaks for lunch and a banquet dinner. Then, the students return to the school on Saturday to rehearse until the morning concert.

Tickets, which are $5 for adults and $3 for students and senior citizens, may be purchased at the door. Money raised supports future PMEA-related events for the Crawford Central School District.

MUSIC EDUCATION ADVOCACY DAY

The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) will hold its second Music Education Advocacy Day at the state Capitol in Harrisburg on Wednesday.

During this event, PMEA members, along with community members from school districts across the state, will have the opportunity to listen to remarks from senators and representatives, as well as representatives from the Education and Policy Leadership Center, National Association for Music Education and the National Association of Music Merchants. They will also be able to attend concerts throughout the day and will meet with their legislators to share the core message of the importance and value of a K-12 sequential, standards-based arts curriculum taught by certified arts educators.

Registration for the event will begin at 9 a.m. in the East Wing Rotunda for those attending. A news conference/rally will follow at 10:30 in the Main Rotunda.
