Event showcases more than 70 decorated trees in fund-raiser for Conneaut Lake Park

11/27/05 — CONNEAUT LAKE PARK — Sarah Turk, 6, couldn’t believe what she found inside the ballroom at the Hotel Conneaut.

“Grandma, you have to see what is on this one,” Sarah said as she pulled her grandmother, Shirley Finch, toward it. “It’s a candy tree!”

The Christmas tree decorated with candy-shaped ornaments is one of more than 70 on display at the third annual Holiday in the Park at Conneaut Lake Park amusement park.

“There are so many here, every one is beautiful,” Finch said as she strolled through the ballroom with her family.

“It’s a nice way to kick off the holidays with your family,” said Sheila Turk, Finch’s daughter.

Individual trees are decorated with butterflies to fruit to toy trains to fishing and everything in between.

This year’s theme is “Memories of Christmas Past” with funds raised by the event to benefit the amusement park.

“The proceeds go back into the park to get through the winter months,” said Nancy Manning, Conneaut Lake Park events coordinator for the park.

The trees, set up inside the Hotel Conneaut, have been decorated by individuals, groups or businesses. The trees are decorated by volunteers at their own expense.

Some 19 of the trees are designated as auction trees — allowing visitors to bid on them to take home after the event closes Dec. 18.

Also, a People’s Choice award will be presented, based on monetary donations used as votes by those viewing the trees.

“We’ll leave a number of them up for New Year’s Eve,” Manning said. The Hotel Conneaut will be open New Year’s Eve for dinner before closing until the 2006 summer season.

In addition to the trees, Holiday in the Park includes a variety of holiday raffles of gift items, gingerbread houses, visits from Santa, crafters, musical entertainment, Santa’s Cafe and more.

There’s even a gift shop with Conneaut Lake Park memorabilia, including Holiday in the Park sweatshirts, a Conneaut Lake Park decks of cards, and wooden houses featuring the carousel, Blue Streak and Hotel Conneaut.

Manning said season passes for the 2006 season also are available for purchase.

Sleigh rides around the park are being offered for $2 each.

Elizabeth’s dining room in the hotel will be open Saturdays from 4 to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the event.

A brunch with Santa will be held Dec. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Elizabeth’s, Manning said.

Holiday at the Park will close Dec. 18 with fireworks that night at 9.
