08/31/007 — When you give to the United Way of Western Crawford County, the funds are split up based on need among area organizations that provide a wide variety of services.
American Red Cross: Emergency services in case of disaster (fires, floods, storms); communication services to armed forces personnel in time of illness, death or the birth of a child.
ARC: Counseling and support for families or individuals with mental retardation; Drop-In Center as a safe, social and educational environment for individuals ages 18 and older with mental retardation; client transportation to recreational and social events sponsored by ARC.
Big Brothers and Sisters: One-on-one matches of at-risk children with adult mentors; activities for children waiting for adult matches.
Cambridge Springs Area Service Board: Community-wide summer youth programs.
Center for Family Services: Counseling and education programs in the areas of parenting, anger management, divorce/separation, etc.; essential services (food, clothing, utilities, shelter).
Community Health Services: Full range of basic and preventative family dental services through Conneaut Valley Dental Center; medical service to patients in an underserved medical area at Conneaut Valley Health Center; Hospice services through Hospice of Crawford County, which allows patients nearing end of life to live free of pain, anxiety and symptoms and empowers them and their families to experience in optimum quality of life; medical transportation through HSSI Medical Transportation; home health services in the form of skilled care by RNs, therapists, home health aides, medical social workers and nutritionists through Visiting Nurse Association.
Crawford County Court Appointed Special Advocates: Volunteer advocates for children involved in juvenile court proceedings primarily as a result of abuse and/or neglect.
Crawford County Coalition on Housing Needs: Furniture closet, emergency shelter program.
Crawford County READ Program: Family literacy program working to support families to end the cycle of illiteracy though education; one-on-one volunteer tutoring for adults to increase functional reading and writing competencies.
Drug and Alcohol Executive Commission: In-school intervention programs for those with drug and alcohol problems.
French Creek Council Boy Scouts of America: Program of character development, citizenship training and personal fitness to boys in grades one to 12 and young men and women ages 14 to 21.
Keystone Blind Association: Specializes services for the blind that will enable visually impaired individuals to safety function as independently as possible.
Meadville Area Free Clinic: Primary health care provided free to those persons who have no form insurance.
Northwest Cleft Palate Institute: Physical and communicational restoration of children born with various craniofacial anomalies (cleft lip/palate).
Penn Lakes Girl Scouts: Worthy Girl Scholarships for Crawford County Scouts; serve girls ages 5 to 17 with creative and innovative programming.
Salvation Army: Essential services (food, clothing, utilities, shelter); special program services.
Women’s Services: 24-hour crisis intervention services to all victims of domestic and sexual violence; shelter services to homeless women and children with safe emergency housing and additional supportive services necessary to help them return to independent living; supportive counseling, information and referral offered via the crisis hotline and in person.
YMCA and YWCA: Wide variety of programs allowing members to strengthen their bodies and gain skills; youth program that provides opportunities for children to gain skills, socialize and increase self-esteem.
United Way of Pennsylvania and United Way of America: Assists and champions efforts of local United Ways, provides statewide leadership on critical issues, and cultivates partnerships beneficial to the 89 local United Ways in Pennsylvania. United Way of Pennsylvania serves as a link between community concerns and policy makers that affect change in vital programs.
Volunteer Center at United Way: Organized Make a Difference Day and provides volunteer groups to build ramps, accessibility issues for homeowners.

North Street Project sure to be 'very disruptive'

City leaders not concerned after financial downgrade
During the past five years, Moody’s Investors Service has assigned three different ratings — all within the range of “upper medium grade” to the City of Meadville’s bonds. In 2007, the city was given a rating of A3, the lowest of the trio. In 2010, the city’s bond rating was raised to A1, the highest ranking in the “upper medium” category. Monday, Moody’s gave the city’s $10,000,000 General Obligation Bonds, Series of 2012, which went on the market Monday, the middle rating of A2.
