Hartstown man injured in buggy hit-and-run

PERRY TOWNSHIP, Mercer County — A Hartstown man is in critical condition in an Ohio hospital’s intensive care unit and his horse was killed after a car struck the back of his buggy on a Mercer County road and fled early Monday.

Pennsylvania State Police at Mercer reported 22-year-old Erven A. Byler was ejected and thrown about 50 feet from his horse-drawn buggy after an unidentified vehicle struck him from behind around 12:50 a.m. on Route 358, just east of Huey Road near Hadley.

Police said Byler was flown by helicopter to St. Elizabeth’s Trauma Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

Police said the vehicle that fled the scene would have likely sustained severe front and possible side and windshield damage.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call state police at (724) 662-6162. Anyone providing information may remain anonymous.
