MEADVILLE —
Look at some time-worn images of Meadville’s Market House from decades long past, says George Nowack, and you’ll see that red-brick venue’s history in busy motion, bustling both inside and out.
And on Saturday at the Market House (and continuing the first Saturday of each month through September) what’s inside — art galore, and more — is coming outside.
Building on the success of its Second Saturday Community Market — which kicked off its second season in early May — the Market House and one of its in-house partners, the Arts for Everyone showcase of local artists, have teamed up to present the Inside/Outside Market. That means there are now two unique markets offered there on two Saturdays each month.
A main goal of expanding upon Second Saturdays with the introduction of the new market, says Nowack, is to promote and support — and introduce to those new there — “that idea that the Market House is the hub ... (for many of the) creative forces of the community” to gather and offer their work, from locally grown produce to locally-made products to locally crafted art in a variety of forms.
Like Second Saturdays, Inside/Outside — which runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. — will also feature live musical entertainment, kids’ activities and food as well as chances for the public to meet a number of the artists whose work is on regular display and offer inside the Market House. The market is also placing some special emphasis on Crawford County’s farming industries, according to Market Master Alice Sjolander, and the county Dairy Princess and representatives from local 4-H and FFA youth agriculture programs are also expected to be regulars.
A total of about 40 different local farms are represented at the Market House at any given time, according to Sjolander, and along with showcasing local art and introducing local artists, Inside/Outside will also “give (those farmers) the opportunity to tell people about everything they do” to bring their produce to market at the Market.
Inside and out, and in a variety of ways, Inside/Outside is set to be “a great time to introduce our vendors to the people who come to support the Market House every day” — and vice versa — says Sjolander.
