MEADVILLE —
Crawford County is highlighted in a new book and its author, Joe Hurley, has several local public appearances planned this weekend.
In 2004, Hurley walked the length of Route 6 from Provincetown, Mass., to Long Beach, Calif., writing weekly columns for more than a dozen newspapers, including The Meadville Tribune. The journey captured the interest of many Tribune readers who chose to greet Hurley and walk with him as he came through Crawford County.
The book about Hurley’s experiences, “Ten Million Steps on Route 6,” which also features the work of photographer Travis Lindhorst, was published recently and one of the first places Hurley chose to visit with the book is Crawford County.
Hurley will be at the Second Saturday event this Saturday morning at the Meadville Market House. On Saturday at 2 p.m. he will give a free, open to the public presentation at Allegheny College in Room 206 of the Henderson Campus Center. On Sunday he will give a free, open to the public presentation at the Dockside in Conneaut Lake Park. Books will be available for purchase at each event and are also for sale at route6walk.com.
The Riverside Inn in Cambridge Springs, a converted church in Venango, Conneaut Lake Park, the road sign art project at the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation site in Vernon Township and Lake Pymatuning are among the local sites in the book.
Hurley points out in the book that his welcome in Crawford County was like no other nationwide.
“We hope people will see a little of themselves and a bit of their national neighbors in the book,” said Hurley, who walked 3,500 miles across mountains, prairies and deserts. Lindhorst followed with a car and camera.
“People like the idea of being able to pick up the book and read a few stories at a time. And with 240 pages we have room for more of Travis’ great pictures,” he said.
Early readers give the book thumbs up.
“What a fantastic read!” said California Republican state Sen. Sharon Runner. “Joe gives readers a window into the richness of the local culture. As a life-long resident of Lancaster and a state senator who proudly represents many of the areas along Route 6 in California, I can speak with confidence that Joe accurately captures the depth of this community’s kind people.”
Route 6 Travel writer Malerie Yolen-Cohen called the book “a beautiful, poignant, and surprisingly engaging portrait of authentic America” written with “a Studs Terkel-like curiosity about fellow Americans and a Mark Twain-ish sense of humor.”
Hurley worked as a reporter and columnist at the Danbury (Conn.) News-Times for more than two decades before embarking on the walk after he retired in 2003. Lindhorst is a freelance photographer raised in the Midwest and now living in Brooklyn, NY.
