You can help Cochranton Library to grow

COCHRANTON — Ground should be broken within a year for a new home for the Cochranton Area Public Library, and the public can aid in the effort.

The building’s age, complicated by the weight of the collection of books, has compromised the library’s structure. The roof of the main library room will no longer support shingles and the foundation will no longer support the weight of a new roof. The electrical system and boiler also need to be updated to code.

Architectural plans are in the final stages of development and the library is currently pursuing avenues for funding the project by applying for grants and organizing fundraising activities. The Friends of the Library group is being reorganized to aid in fundraising efforts. Upcoming fundraisers include an Art and Textile Auction in spring 2013 and the semi-annual book sales in November and May. In addition, the library seeks donations to its building fund.

The current main library area was constructed from two World War II-era Keystone Ordnance Works buildings. After the buildings were transported by truck to Cochranton from the Greenwood Township Ordnance Works, the structures were mounted on cement piers and attached to the rear of an existing old house. After seventy years of use in various capacities from an elementary school cafeteria to a youth recreation center to a library, the buildings have deteriorated to the point where they need to be replaced.

The library has served Cochranton and the surrounding area since 1969. Current services include free book, audio book, eBook, and DVD circulation; internet-enabled patron computers as well as free wi-fi for laptops and portable devices; interlibrary loan; a public access copier; and community meeting rooms. Library programming includes many free events such as the Summer Reading Program, educational events for children and their families, the Tales That Wag program, internet and art classes and workshops for a variety of interests.
