VERNON TOWNSHIP —
Crawford County’s only Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant is expected to reopen at the end of October, according to Art Cocolin, owner of the local KFC franchise.
The restaurant was damaged early March 27 when one of three fryers caught fire. While there was no structural damage, there was smoke damage throughout the building, he said. The process has taken longer than originally planned because the restaurant is undergoing a complete remodeling.
“Every 10 years, you have to upgrade under the franchise agreement,” Cocolin said recently. “We decided to do it now even though we had a couple of years left.”
The interior of the restaurant is being redesigned and now will accommodate up to 75 when it reopens, according to Cocolin. It previously had seating for 50.
While the restaurant has been closed since the fire, the franchise has been able to continue all its catering business through use of a large truck with a portable kitchen and use of other kitchen facilities.
The firm had 22 employees who were laid off after the fire, but more than half of them are expected to return, he said.
