Meadville's new city hall price tag continues to climb

MEADVILLE — With another bump in the budget, the transition of the former armory on Diamond Park into Meadville City Hall continues.

During their Wednesday study session, Meadville City Council gave the go-ahead to up the project budget from $2,336,000 to $2,491,918, a move that will enable the scope of work included under current contracts for work at the site to be expanded to include construction of the police garage, an exterior staircase and site work including the installation of concrete sidewalks at the rear of the building.

When first proposed last spring, the cost of the project was approximately $1,740,000. However, once work was under way, it was decided that insulation needed to be added to the roof, downspout improvements were necessary for the long-term welfare of the structure, water problems were discovered in the basement and an electrical upgrade was required.

According to City Manager Joe Chriest, savings realized when the cost of several new trucks recently purchased by the city came in lower than expected will be used to fund the increased cost of construction.

After a lengthy discussion that included an impassioned plea from Meadville Police Chief Dave Stefanucci to not delay construction of the garage until spring, council agreed to proceed with the proposed contract expansion. For Stefanucci, the bottom line was simple. “I can’t go through the winter without a garage,” he said. Council agreed.

Chriest told council that current plans call for the administrative portion of the current city building on Water Street to close on Oct. 24, 25 and 26 for the move. The city’s administrative offices will be open for business on Oct. 29.
