19 companies battle Conneaut Lake blaze

SADSBURY TOWNSHIP — A fire in a two-story former museum and country store at 11563 Route 618 in Sadsbury Township brought volunteer firefighters from 19 companies covering three Pennsylvania counties and Ohio to the scene.

The fire was reported at 6:44 p.m.; minutes later, firefighters arriving on the scene had declared it a working fire. Within half an hour, a 15-second horn blast had been sounded, ordering firefighters to evacuate the structure.

According to Conneaut Lake resident Carl Burkett Jr., who owned the building from its 1965 construction until 2005, it started as an A-frame building that was operated as an Indian museum. Over the years, it was converted into a general store; its final dimensions were 36-feet-by-70-feet with two stories across the front.

Conneaut Lake Park Volunteer Fire Department was assisted at the scene by Conneaut Lake, Summit, Vernon Central, Conneautville, Linesville, North Shenango, Fallowfield, Jamestown, Vernon Township, Hayfield, Greenwood, Cochranton, Springboro and West Mead II volunteer fire departments; Albion Volunteer Fire Department from Erie County; Hempfield Volunteer Fire Department from Mercer County; and firefighters from Pierpont and Andover, Ohio, as well as Conneaut Lake Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police and Conneaut Lake Area Ambulance Service. Meadville Ambulance Service was on standby.
