TITUSVILLE —
An $83,000 state grant will be used to acquire rights-of-way on land along the proposed Queen City Trail extension in Titusville, according to Amy Schmidt, grant administrator for the Crawford County Planning Office.
The grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is part of an extension of the trail from its present end on South Martin Street, north 1.65 miles to Perry Street Station.
In September, the trail was awarded a $614,500 construction grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s Transportation Enhancement program that’s administered through the Northwest Regional Planning Commission.
The trail extension will help close the gap in the Erie-to-Pittsburgh Trail, one of Pennsylvania’s highest greenways priorities.
“Our grant investments work to bolster our vision for the strength of our economy, the vibrancy of our communities, the health of our families and our quality of life in Pennsylvania,” Richard Allan, secretary of DCNR, said in a statement. “These grants allow us to partner with communities so that they can expand and improve the wonderful assets that make the places we call home vital and attractive.”
Bids for construction of the trail extension will take place by August 2014, if not before, said Schmidt.
A second phase will continue the trail another two miles from Perry Street Station to a planned trailhead at Wal-Mart along Route 8, north of Titusville, she said.
The project will provide a safe, alternative route for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, separating them from vehicular traffic along Route 8 between downtown Titusville and Wal-Mart, Schmidt said.
