License plate holder could be key to hit-and-run

MEADVILLE — The owner of the silver Ford pickup probably thought the front license plate holder decorated with 3-D grinning skulls was pretty cool. It’s the kind of thing that you’d show to friends and the kind of thing that would get you noticed.

Today, pieces of that license plate holder are the most significant clue in an unsolved case, and Meadville police are asking for your help generating leads.

The license plate holder was smashed in the early hours of Dec. 21, 2012, when the pickup, driven by a 30-something white male about 5 feet, 11 inches tall, crashed into the rear of a 2005 Ford Focus. The Focus was stopped at a stop sign in the southbound lane of Grove Street at its intersection with Chestnut Street.

The impact folded the Focus’ rear bumper and trunk inward and left the back window shattered.

The driver of the truck left his vehicle and checked to see if the driver of Focus was OK. Then he jumped back into the truck and drove away.

Left sticking out of the crushed bumper was a large chunk of the skull license plate holder and scattered about the intersection were several of the skulls.

It also appeared from wreckage at the scene that the right front headlight of the truck was broken.

If you have any information about this truck, its owner or the driver, call Meadville police now at 724-6100.
