Tire plant touted at economic shot in the arm for region

MEADVILLE — Construction of a waste tires-to-energy plant in Greenwood Township is touted to be an economic shot in the arm for Crawford County.

Erie Renewable Energy is proposing a $375 million project at the Keystone Regional Industrial Park in Greenwood Township, about 10 miles south of Meadville. The 80-acre site is located off Adamsville Road, near Route 19 and about two miles from Interstate 79.

Of the $375 million, $250 million or more will be in capital investment by the company, according to Greg Rubino, project manager for Erie Renewable Energy.

It would add 200 jobs during its two-year construction time-frame. It would create 60 full-time jobs with an estimated average salary of $50,000, Rubino said.

Another 200 jobs would be created in related and spin-off industries supporting the plant such as trucking, metal industries, supply and others.

The plant also could help attract new business to the county with cost-effective power production.

“This is ideal for us,” said Mark Turner, executive director of the Economic Progress Alliance of Crawford County, which is developing the industrial park.

If the project goes forward it would be the first tenant at the industrial park which has been under development since the late 1990s. The EPA is set to begin installation of a water system to serve the park.

“This project (the industrial park) has been in the pre-development stage,” Turner said. “The water system is the next step.”

Water lines are expected to be run to the waste tires-to-energy plant site by the end of this year, and the water system finished by June 2011, Turner said.

Bill Bragg, chairman of board of directors of the Economic Progress Alliance, said he’s more than pleased to see development at the park.

“This is exciting,” Bragg said. “It’s a $375 million development.”
