Elinor Phoebe Shaffer Stuyvesant

MEADVILLE — Elinor Phoebe Shaffer Stuyvesant of Meadville, formerly of Greenville, passed away in Meadville Medical Center on Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2012, at 8:15 a.m. following an illness. She was 92 years old.

Mrs. Stuyvesant was born April 13, 1919, in Sharon, a daughter of Frederick C. Shaffer and Kate Hamor Shaffer. She was a life-long resident of Greenville, being the fifth generation of her family to reside in Greenville.

She graduated from Penn High School in 1936 as first honor student in her class. On Aug. 4, 1938, she married her husband, Dale A. Stuyvesant, who preceded her in death in 2002. In 1981 Mrs. Stuyvesant retired from First National Bank of Mercer County as head bookkeeper after 27 years of service.

She was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Greenville, teaching Bible school and serving as a member of the Bible study group “Friends.” She was a 1945 founding member of TEM club and a member of the Golden Girls. In 1995 and 1996 her poems were published by the National Library of Poetry and Sparrowgrass Poetry Forum. In 1999, “Legacy,” her book of poems and essays, was published. In this book she expressed her faith and her irrepressible sense of humor.

Mrs. Stuyvesant is survived by a son, Mark Stuyvesant and his wife, Stephanie, of Cranesville; and four grandchildren, Eric Stuyvesant of Texas, Catherine Stuyvesant of Englewood, Ohio, Mark Stuyvesant II of Cranesville, and Leanne Sturm and her husband, Ryan, of Cambridge Springs.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Fred Stuyvesant; and a stillborn daughter, Glenda.

Friends may call at Baird Funeral, 14 Louisa Ave., Greenville, on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Burial will take place at Shenango Valley Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Good Shepherd Inc. for their food pantry or other charitable services at 144 Main St., Greenville, Pa. 16125.
