CONNEAUT LAKE — Gary M. Chapin, 49, of Conneaut Lake, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community as a result of injuries sustained while on duty at the Crawford County Correctional Facility.

He was born in Meadville on May 16, 1961, a son of Arthur A. and Patricia J. Oswald Chapin. He married Mary Janis Hanek on Aug. 3, 1996, and she survives.

He was a corrections officer at the Crawford County Correctional Facility since March 2007 and previously had worked as a police officer on the Linesville, Jamestown, Conneaut Lake, West Mead Township and Cambridge Springs police forces. He was a 1979 graduate of Linesville High School and during high school he was a Linesville Future Farmers of America member. He was an assistant leader of the Conneaut Lake Ag 4-H Club and he enjoyed working with kids at the Crawford County Fair. He also enjoyed boating, traveling to Walt Disney World and Ft. Myers Beach, camping, making his famous pizza burgers and attending his children’s sporting events.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, Janis, of 14 years, include a daughter, Mary Sara Weaver, and a son, Benjamin Weaver, both at home; a sister, Carolyn Kreider and her husband, Roger, of Conneautville; a brother, Greg Chapin and his wife, Theresa, of Meadville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Ronald Chapin.

Calling hours will be Friday from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Waid-Coleman Funeral Home Inc., 12422 Conneaut Lake Road, Conneaut Lake.

The funeral and committal service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Watson Run Presbyterian Church, 13594 Harmonsburg Road, Meadville, with Cheryl Larson, lay minister, and the Rev. Frank Duncan, retired pastor of Watson Run Presbyterian Church, officiating.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Conneaut Lake Ag 4-H Club, c/o PO Box 467, Conneaut Lake, Pa. 16316, to place a bench at Gary’s favorite spot at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.
