Lila A. Mercatoris

MEADVILLE — Lila A. Mercatoris, 92, of Meadville, died Monday, Nov. 5, 2012, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.

She was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of David Woolery and Lucie Johnson Woolery Rickerson Jones. She married Morris D. Mercatoris Feb. 7, 1941, and he preceded her in death Dec. 1, 2001.

Lila attended public schools in Isabell and Saegertown and graduated from Meadville High School. She subsequently graduated from Penn State University and was employed as a high school teacher for a short time in Arkansas, Montana and Pennsylvania.

Lila was a former board member and past president of Hillside Home and City Hospital Auxiliary, and former member of the Meadville Medical Center Board of Incorporators. A volunteer for 40 years, she was instrumental in establishing the candy striper program, the volunteer system and the snack and gift shop at City Hospital.

Lila was active at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community where she served as a committee member for 12 years for public relations in promoting and developing the Wesbury Villas and she was chairperson for Wesbury’s 75th anniversary celebration.

A member of Stone United Methodist Church, Lila served as a flower chairperson for 25 years. She was a member and past president of the Meadville Garden Club, member of the Antique Study Club and Daughters of the American Revolution, and was a former chairperson of the Meadville Bicentennial committee. Additionally, she was a Penn State Pioneer and member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.

Survivors include two sons, Douglas Mercatoris of Snowmass Village, Colo., and Michael Mercatoris and his wife, Rosie, of Meadville; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Mercatoris of Meadville; three grandchildren, Mike Mercatoris and his wife, Liz, of Carbondale, Colo., Jake Mercatoris and his wife, Becky, of Pittsburgh, and David Mercatoris of Snowmass Village; three great-grandchildren, Maddie, George and Teddy Mercatoris; four sisters, Corinne Pritchard of Meadville, Elaine Adam of East Hickory, Margaret Hohenstein of Houston, Texas, and Ida Mae Judge of Port Orange, Fla.; a brother, Elliot Woolery and his wife, Donna, of Brainerd, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David Mercatoris.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Meadville Medical Center Foundation, 1015 Grove St., or the Wesbury Foundation, 31 N. Park Ave., both of Meadville, Pa. 16335.
