MEADVILLE —
Floyd Byron Ray, 79, of Meadville, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 13, 2012, at home following a two-year battle with cancer.
He was born Feb. 11, 1933, in Cooperstown, a son of Floyd Otis and Lexie Rieb Ray. He married Mildred Stewart, daughter of Robert Earl and Jennie McClintock Stewart, in 1953, and she survives.
He attended Titusville High School and enlisted in the National Guard. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict serving with the 28th Division from 1950-53.
Floyd worked first at Struthers Wells Forge in Titusville, then Gustafson Builders of Oil City. He then worked several years as a heavy equipment operator for Trumbull Construction Co. helping to build both interstates 80 and 79. He then was employed by PennDOT (Pennsylvania Department of Transportation) for more than 33 years, retiring as a foreman in 1991.
Floyd liked to travel. He and his wife traveled to Canada and all but three of the 50 states. He also enjoyed meeting his “coffee buddies” at McDonald’s every morning.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, Mildred, include a son, Roger Ray and his wife, Lori, of Franklin; a daughter, Sandra Whitman and her husband, Dana, of Cooperstown; four grandchildren, Easton Ray of Union City, Noah Ray of Franklin, Megan O’Neil and her husband, Justin, of Knox, and Alicia Hargis and her husband, Joshua, of Greenwood, Ind.; a beloved great-granddaughter, Ashlyn O’Neil; a sister, Alice Crawford of Townville; a sister-in-law, Lenore Ray of Titusville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Neal and an infant brother, Glenn Ray; and a sister, Yvonne Mailliard.
Private family services will be held at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home Inc., 581 Chestnut St., Meadville, with the Rev. Marshall Lillie, chaplain of Hospice of Crawford County, officiating.
Interment will be in Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens, Cranberry.
The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine St., Meadville, Pa. 16335.
