Stephen Ostridge

ERIE — Stephen Ostridge, 95, of 560 E. Third St., Erie, formerly of Juniper Village, Meadville, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Soldiers and Sailors Home, Erie.

Stephen was born in Vanport, Beaver County, on Dec. 28, 1916, a son of the late George and Mary (Doujancie) Ostridge. Stephen married Elsie Schmitt; she preceded him in death on Nov. 24, 1986.

Stephen had been a member of St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, Meadville. A World War II veteran, Stephen retired from the U.S. Navy. He was a naval officer serving on the USS Pennsylvania. The battleship was in dry-dock for repairs in the Pearl Harbor Navy Yard when the Japanese attacked. According to various records, the USS Pennsylvania was the first ship to return fire. Following his retirement from the U.S. Navy, Stephen went on to work in Washington, D.C., as a master chief and an admiral assistant. Following his career, he and his wife moved to a farm in the Tidioute area where he served as justice of the peace. In his later years he worked part-time as a bartender.

He was a member of the Elks Club. He loved reading and playing cards. Stephen will be remembered as a very friendly person who enjoyed being around others.

Stephen is survived by a niece, Nancy Feeney of Falls Church, Va., who was like a daughter to him; a brother-in-law, Theodore Schmitt and his wife, Winifred, of Melbourne, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Donadio of Pompton Plains, N.J.; and seven nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Elsie, Stephen was preceded in death by a nephew, John Schmitt, who was like a son to him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, 383 Arch St., Meadville, at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with Father Johnathan Schmolt, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment will take place in Fishkill Cemetery, Fishkill, N.Y.

Memorial contributions may be made to Soldiers and Sailors Home, 560 E. Third St., Erie, Pa. 16507.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
