BEAUFORT, S.C. —
Marjorie S. Spetz, 85, wife of retired U.S. Navy Lt. Robert A. Spetz, of Beaufort, S.C., died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012, at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Beaufort.
Marjorie Spetz was born June 3, 1927, in Miami. Her grandparents and mother had moved to Florida to escape the brutal Scottish weather. They settled in the little town of Miami and Marjorie’s mother married a Florida native. Marge graduated from Miami High School in 1944 and immediately went to work for the industrial manager of the Seventh Naval District. She married Bob Spetz, a U.S. Navy officer, in 1945 in Coconut Grove Presbyterian Church. After the war, they returned to Bob’s previous place of work in Meadville, where they stayed for 30 years. After her kids were older, she worked part-time as a staff member in the Alumni Office at Allegheny College in Meadville, and was a full-time mom always. Marge got involved with volunteer hospital work and was also chairman and part of a cast of dancers that put on biennial shows for the benefit of the hospital.
Marge was active in ladies golf and won the Meadville Country Club Ladies Golf Championship for nine years. The family moved to North Myrtle Beach, then Beaufort, because of southern job opportunities, and Marge continued her wins. For the past several years physical disabilities caused her retirement from the game.
In Marge and Bob’s travels they were fortunate to combine their efforts with eight other original couples to start a mission church in a furniture store in Myrtle Beach. The church took off and flourished.
Marge had two daughters, Leslie Olson (Tom) from Beaufort and Sally Katz (Doug) from Raleigh, N.C. Les has two children, Erik (Andrea) from Vienna, Va., and Amy Johnson (Jeff) from Charlotte, N.C. She has four grandchildren, Maggie and Eliza Johnson and Ian and Lauren Olson.
She was loved by friends, cherished by her family and missed by all.
Anderson Funeral Home and Crematory, Beaufort, is serving the family, and can be contacted at andersonfuneralhomebeaufortsc.com.
