SAEGERTOWN —
Wanda Welsh, 90, formerly of Cochranton and a resident of the Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown, for the past three years, died Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at Meadville Medical Center.
Born March 2, 1922, in Sunville, she was the daughter of Louis Wallace and Laura Loretta Russell. She married Dr. James Richard Welsh during World War II, just before he was sent off to Africa. He preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1991.
She was a homemaker throughout her marriage and very active in the Cochranton community. As a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club in Cochranton she served for years on the scholarship selection committee until it was taken over by the Crawford Heritage Community Foundation. She was an active member of Cochranton United Methodist Church, serving in various capacities including treasurer of the Women’s Club, a member of the bell choir, various Bible study groups, making peanut brittle and working with the kitchen crew for most church activities.
Survivors include her children, Edwin Welsh of Rock Hill, S.C., and his former wife, Janis, of Mount Holly, N.C., and Joye Pickens and her husband, David, of Cochranton; a daughter-in-law, Linda Welsh of Meadville; grandchildren, Penny Welsh of Rock Hill, and Felicia Bennett and her husband, Ryan, of Meadville; stepgrandchildren, Jennifer Calvert and her husband, Gene, of Harmonsburg, and Kimberly Powell of Dallas, Texas; stepgreat-grandchildren, Nicole, Zachary and Katlynn Calvert of Harmonsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Penny; a son, Donald; an infant brother, Beryl Russell; a sister, Genta Reese; and a brother, James Russell.
Friends will be received at Cochranton United Methodist Church, 114 E. Adams St., on Tuesday from 4 to 6 p.m. A memorial service will be at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Russell Hines officiating.
Interment will be in Sunville Cemetery.
The family ask that memorials be made to Cochranton United Methodist Church.
Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., Cochranton, is in charge of arrangements.
