Nora (Dutch) B. Furno

MEADVILLE — Nora (Dutch) B. Furno, 81, of 101 Wadsworth Ave., Meadville, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, at home.

Dutch was born in Pittsburgh on Feb. 18, 1931, a daughter of the late James and Emma Morse Haines. In October 1949, Dutch married Alfred Furno Sr.; he survives.

She was a member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Meadville.

After 30 years of service, Dutch retired from the dietary department of the former Spencer Hospital. She attended schools in Diamond, Titusville and Meadville. She was a dedicated homemaker and a talented seamstress, sewing for many area families. She enjoyed crocheting and, over the years, made countless items such as slippers, blankets and shawls for the church as well as for nursing homes. Dutch won several Blue Ribbons at the Crawford County Fair for her crocheting. She was a life member of the Italian Civic Club (ICC). Dutch was known as the neighborhood popsicle lady, as she loved handing out popsicles to all area children, but her greatest love in life was her family, especially her grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Alfred, of 63 years, Dutch is survived by a son, Alfred Furno Jr. and his wife, Sue, of Meadville; a daughter, Marilyn Shelledy and her husband, Jim, of Meadville, three grandchildren, Chris McHale and his wife, Flor, Lindsay Shelledy and Jarrett Furno; two sisters, Eleanor Hopkins and her husband, Carl, of Titusville, and Martha Hopkins and her husband, Bob, of Meadville; a brother, Ralph Haines and his wife, Mary Lou, of Meadville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Dutch was preceded in death by three brothers, Albert, James and Bill Haines; and four sisters, Ada Jones, Claire Vanderhoof, Jeanette Prather and Virginia Proper.

Family and friends are invited to call today from 4 to 8 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a scripture service will be conducted at 7 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with Father Marc Solomon, pastor, as celebrant.

Entombment will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Crawford County, 464 Pine St., Meadville, Pa. 16335.
