John Vanderstappen

JAMESTOWN — John Vanderstappen, 85, of 4444 U.S. Highway 322, Jamestown, died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at 5:20 a.m. at UPMC Horizon, Greenville, Mercer County, following a brief illness.

Born in the Netherlands on June 13, 1927, he was a son of Johannes and Hanneka (Van Der Poel) VanDerStappen. He married Johanna Van De Ven on Aug. 25, 1954.

John and Johanna immigrated to the United States in 1954. He worked on a dairy farm in Franklin before purchasing his own, first in Cochranton and then buying one in Adamsville. He retired in 1984 and focused on his wood carving hobby. He owned and operated the Woodcarver’s Gallery in Jamestown from 1995 through 2011. He loved carving and the opportunity it gave him to meet and visit with people. He loved to share his heritage with people.

He joined the Jamestown Lions Club, March 25, 1985, was king lion in 1992-93, lion of the year in 1993-94 and received two Melvin Jones Fellow awards in 2002 and 2012. He was recipient of the 1985 Crawford County Agricultural Hall of Fame and recipient of the Conservation District Service Award.

He was a member of St. Margaret’s Roman Catholic Church, Jamestown, and served as an usher.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Johanna Vanderstappen; three sons, Peter Vanderstappen and his wife, Barb, of Lebanon, John Vanderstappen and his wife, Amy, of Transfer and Hans Vanderstappen of Hartstown; a daughter, Christine Waddell and her husband, Robert, of Townville; seven grandchildren, Ericka Friddle and her husband, Chris, Ty Vanderstappen, Lynde Brownlee and her husband, William, Wes Vanderstappen, Josh Waddell and his wife, Hayley, Joe Waddell and Katie Waddell; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Antoon VanDerStappen, Wilhelm VanDerStappen, Joe VanDerStappen and Joe C. VanDerStappen, all of the Netherlands; a sister, Elizabeth Van De Ven of the Netherlands; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and five brothers, Piet VanDerStappen, Andre VanDerStappen, the Rev. Harrie VanDerStappen, Martin VanDerStappen and Albert VanDerStappen.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Randall Funeral Home, 416 Liberty St., Jamestown.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, Jamestown, with Father Christopher Barnes, pastor, as celebrant.

The family requests donations be made to St. Margaret’s Church, 701 Denver St., Jamestown, Pa. 16134; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
