Robert B. Nichols

MEADVILLE — Robert B. Nichols, 85, of Ponce Inlet, Fla., formerly of Meadville, passed away in his sleep in the early-morning hours of Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, due to an assortment of maladies which overtook him during the past eight months.

Robert was born on May 25, 1927, in Meadville, a son of Harry (Hez) Nichols and Mary Dickson Nichols. He married the love of his life, Darlene Ann (Hoyland) Nichols of New Castle on May 8, 1948, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 2008.

After graduating from Meadville High School in 1945, Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army and was subsequently honorably discharged and returned to Meadville to help take care of his widowed mother. In the early 1950s, Robert took a job with the Bessemer Lake Erie Railroad in Greenville and worked there for more than 30 years, retiring in 1982. In 1987, he and Darlene moved to Ponce Inlet, Fla., to live out their remaining years together in the warmth of the Florida sun and the sand of the ocean beaches.

Robert was a tremendous human being; a loving husband; a dedicated and loyal care taker for his beloved wife in her declining years; a wonderful father; and a good friend to many. His greatest love in life was his wife and his family. Robert rarely took the time to do things for himself, but was always there to do things for family and friends. He enjoyed golf; NASCAR and Indy car racing; the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Pittsburgh Steelers; the Michigan Wolverines and the Florida Gators. He belonged to the BPO Elks Lodge 219.

In addition to his beloved wife, Robert was preceded in death by his parents; his brother Harry Arthur (Art) Nichols; a set of still-born sibling twins; a son-in-law (Gregg Christy); a grandson (John Rhodes) a dear and close cousin (Ronald F. Wolff); a dear and close friend (Virgil Markey); and many other relatives and friends.

Robert is survived by a daughter, Judy Kenney, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Cathy Nichols, of Palm Bay, Fla.; a daughter, Kathleen Christy, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and a former daughter-in-law,Theresa DeLorenzo Nichols, of Meadville. He is also survived by grandchildren Colin and Katie Kenney of Florida and Brian and Andy Nichols of Meadville; as well as four great-grandchildren, Kayli Kenney and Lillyanna Norona of Florida and Anthony and Bryn Nichols of Meadville; and many other relatives and friends.

There will be no calling hours and no memorial service, in compliance with his wishes.

The family suggests memorials be made to either the American Cancer Society; or Hospice; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
