MEADVILLE —
S. Elmer Baum, 96, formerly of Kittanning, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012, at Meadville Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 18, 1915, in Rayburn Township, Armstrong County, to William E. and Nora Blanche Snyder Baum.
Elmer graduated from Kittanning High School in 1936 and was a lifetime resident of Kittanning until five years ago when he moved to Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community in Meadville. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Kittanning and also attended First Baptist Church. Elmer worked as a modeler for Eljer Manufacturing of Ford City for 43 years until his retirement in 1980. In his free time he loved woodworking, and he was always making beautiful pieces of furniture or anything useful; his mug racks and angel food cake stands are in homes throughout the United States.
Elmer enjoyed hunting and watching football, baseball, golf and anything Pittsburgh. In his younger years, he played baseball for the Kittanning Hose Co. 6 team and the East Kittanning team. Playing cards was a favorite pastime for him and his wife, and later it became a Sunday tradition with his daughter and granddaughter for the last several years. Elmer will be remembered for the love he had for his family, and he will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, John Paul (Jack) Baum and wife, Kathie, of Conneaut Lake; daughter, Nancy Joanne Kordes, of Meadville; grandchildren, Eric Baum and wife, Edie, Scott Baum, Amy Donghia and husband, Mike, Melissa Rowles, Jeffrey Kordes and wife, Tammy, and Kristen Kordes; great-grandchildren, Emily and Cooper Baum, Hanna and Lauren Baum, Kaitlyn and Ashlee Rowles, and Riley and Reece Kordes; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 65 years, Helen P. Moore Baum, who died Oct. 9, 2003; brothers, Francis Baum and Howard Baum; sisters, Gladys Anthony, Winifred Schaffer and Helen M. Labutka; and son-in-law, Jack Kordes.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 515 N. McKean St., Kittanning, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. John W. Snyder officiating.
Interment will follow at Lawn Haven Burial Estates, East Franklin Township, Armstrong County.
Memorial contributions may be made in Elmer’s honor to the Wesbury United Methodist Benevolent Fund, 31 North Park Ave., Meadville, Pa. 16335.
