William (Bill) R. Allen

MEADVILLE — William (Bill) R. Allen, 88, of Meadville, passed away Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Aug. 23, 1924, in Meadville, a son of Trace John and Sarah Dain Allen. He married June Karns on Sept. 20, 1947.

Bill was a 1942 graduate of Meadville High School and attended the former Fenn College in Cleveland.

He was veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theater of Operations. He served from 1943 to 1946 with the 405th Army Field Artillery B Battery Tank Unit.

He worked for the Meadville Telephone Company and subsequently Alltel for 39 years, retiring as supervisor. He previously worked at Westinghouse.

Bill was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a life member of Meadville Elks Lodge 219 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville, a member of Meadville Masonic Lodge 408, New Castle Consistory, Scottish Rite Bodies and Kismet Grotto. He was a former member of the Meadville Western Crawford County Chamber of Commerce.

Bill enjoyed bowling and golfing and was an avid sports fan.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife June of 65 years, include a daughter, Cinda Bilinski and her husband, Jerome, of Meadville; three sons, Steven Allen and his wife, Barbara, of Lakeland, Fla., Mark Allen and his wife, Robi,n of Columbus, Ohio, and Douglas Allen and his wife Jacqueline of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Geraldine Barr Freyermuth of Albuquerque, N.M., and Virginia Terrill of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; nine grandchildren, Tricia Nicewonger, Tracey Clapper, and Rachelle, Matthew, Nicholas, Elizabeth, Bethany, Melissa and Melanie Allen; six great-grandchildren, Riley Fink, Rowan and Elijah Nicewonger, and Hannah, Emily and Kasey Allen; and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dain Allen; and a sister, Bernice Allen.

Calling hours will be Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville, with a Masonic service at 5 p.m.

The funeral and committal service will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 649 Park Ave., Meadville, with the Rev. Benjamin Travis, Pastor, officiating and military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.
