Albert Capozzi Sr.

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — Albert Capozzi Sr., 87, of Williamsville, N.Y., formerly of Buffalo, N.Y., and in his earlier years, Meadville, passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Millard Suburban Hospital, Williamsville.

Albert was born in Meadville on Jan. 13, 1926, a son of the late Anthony and Josephine Miele Capozzi. He married Mary B. LaBruzzo, who preceded him in death on Oct. 25, 2009.

Albert was a devoted and longtime member of Holy Angels Church, Buffalo, where he volunteered his time with numerous church functions.

After 20 years of service, Albert retired as a millwright from General Motors, Tonawanda, N.Y., plant. A graduate of Meadville High School, Albert also attended college. A U.S. Navy veteran during World War II, Albert served his country from April 12, 1944, until his honorable discharge on May 20, 1946. He served on the USS Randolph as a firefighter. He was the recipient of the Pacific Theatre Ribbon with three stars, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

While living in Meadville, Albert was a member and former president of the Italian Civic Club. He enjoyed watching both college and professional football, especially Notre Dame and the Buffalo Bills. For many years, Albert also enjoyed golfing and had won many local golf tournaments in the Meadville area. While living in Buffalo, Albert and his wife received the City of Buffalo Mayor’s House Beautification Award for their lovely home on the corner of Jersey and Fargo. He and Mary also received the Community Leader Award as well as the Italian-American Community Honor for the “true meaning of faith and family.” This honor was earned and evidenced by the steadfast devotion to their son, Anthony, who served more than 22 years in prison for rape, a crime he never committed. After 22 years of incarceration, he was exonerated and released after DNA proved him innocent. The unwavering faith in God displayed by Albert and family was without end. The family was featured in many news stories for their testament of faith.

Albert is survived by five children, Sharyn Miller and her husband, William, Anthony Capozzi, Kathleen Jeras, Pamela Guenther and her husband, Mark, and Albert Capozzi Jr.; nine grandchildren, Gina O’Kussick and her husband, Michael, Dawn Marie Townsell and her husband, Christopher, Nicole Jeras, Meagan Miller, Leah Costanzo and her husband, Dennis, Hubert Jeras, Mark Guenther Jr., Martin Jeras and Sarah Guenther; six great-grandchildren, Charles Ricci, Danielle Ricci, Grace Townsell, Jack Townsell, Amber O’Kussick and Cole Costanzo; a brother-in-law, Norman (Corky) LaBruzzo and his wife, Marie; two sisters-in-law, Linda GiGante and her husband, Raymond, and Rose LaBruzzo; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his beloved wife, Mary, of 57 years, Albert was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Deletta (Dorothy) Nuzzulo, Anna Barco and Carmella LaPuma; two brothers, John and Michael Capozzi; and a brother-in-law, Gus LaBruzzo.

Family and friends are invited to call on Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a scripture service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, with Father Marc Solomon, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.
