Santa Carol Augustine Callender

MEADVILLE — Santa Carol Augustine Callender, 78, of 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, formerly of 1120 Market St., passed away Thursday, Feb, 14, 2013, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.

Carol was born at home in Port Royal on Dec. 25, 1934, a daughter of the late Vincent Moses and Ada Sophrina Yingst Burdge.

Following graduation from Blain High School in 1953, Carol worked as a nurse’s aide at a state hospital near Harrisburg. She married her first husband, Eugene L. Augustine, on April 9, 1954. During this time she worked on a farm for more than 7 years, did housekeeping at her children’s school for several years and worked as a bartender/waitress for more than 12 years, all in the Spartansburg area. On Aug. 26, 1978, Carol married her second husband, Merle A. Callender, where she took pride in being a stay-home wife. He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1983. Following his passing, her life revolved around her children and grandchildren. They were the center of her life where she enjoyed playing and baking with them.

Carol is survived a daughter, Caroline Calhoun and her husband, Jack, of Columbus; a son, Ricky Augustine and his wife, Gloria, of Meadville; six grandchildren, John Calhoun, Joe Calhoun, Cara Calhoun MaGill, Richard (Gene) Augustine, Josh Augustine and Tamara L. (Tami) Augustine; two stepgrandsons, Jack Calhoun Jr. and Gene Calhoun; 19 great-grandchildren, three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Etta Naylor; two brothers, Carson Ritter Ford Burdge and Vincent Harry Burdge; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Merle, Carol was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, George McClellan Burdge, Josephine Catherine Henry, Ruth Pauline Bargo, an infant Mary Ada Burdge, Anna Mae Palm, a stillborn Doris Marie Burdge and William Bud Burdge.

At the family’s request, there will be no visitation.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date.

Interment will take place in Spartansburg Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, Pa. 16335.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
