Edith Louise Smith

CARLTON — Edith Louise Smith, 89, of 51 Kimes Road, Carlton, died Wednesday July 28, 2010, at her residence following a four-month illness.

Born, April 27, 1921, in Carlton, she was a daughter of Harper N. and Florence I. Buchanan Hart. She married Oscar G. Smith on Oct. 2, 1943, and he preceded her in death on Jan. 11, 1998.

She was a 1939 graduate of Cochranton High School and a 1941 graduate of Meadville Commercial College. She was a secretary at the former Barrett Tool located in Meadville and also was a civilian secretary for the commanding general at the U.S. Army Base at Camp Beal, Calif. Returning to Pennsylvania following World War II, she was a secretary for Byham’s Insurance and most recently worked with the ARC of Crawford County caring for those with special needs.

She was a member of Cochranton Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, secretary, treasurer, Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Ruth Circle of the Church. She was also a member of the Pennsylvania Farmers Union, serving as the secretary/treasurer, and was a member of the Canal Township Homemakers Club.

She and her husband were lifelong farmers and she enjoyed tending to her chickens, calves and all of the family pets. In addition to being a devoted wife, mom and grandma, she enjoyed gardening, canning and preserving, sewing, needlework, crocheting, tatting, baking pies for the Presbyterian Church booth at the Cochranton Fair and winning numerous blue ribbons in the Home Show Building during fair week.

She is survived by a son, Gerald K. Smith of Carlton, and two daughters, Rita E. Preston and her husband, Robert, of Cochranton, and Carol L. Morrison and her husband, William, of Carlton; two grandchildren, William Morrison III and his wife, Karen, of Carlton, and Staff Sgt. Shawn Preston and his wife, Dana, of Ft. Belvoir, Va.; six great-grandchildren, Mikaela and Megan Orlasky of Carlton, Ashley Sandgren of Merritt Island, Fla., Nikki Sandgren of Apopka, Fla., and Zachary Eddy and Aria Preston of Ft. Belvoir, Va.; and two sisters, Ella McCartney and her husband, Richard, of Sandy Lake, and Julia Deeter of Frankfort, Ind.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Ada Donley, Helen Hart and Mary Stroup.

Friends may call at Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St. Cochranton, today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Cochranton Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. J. Harvey Boal of the church and the Rev. Mark Rusnak of AseraCare  Hospice officiating.

Interment will be in Cochranton Cemetery.
