FRANKLIN —
Mercedes S. Vega, 96, a resident of Franklin, died peacefully at 5:26 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012, with her family by her side at The Caring Place of Franklin following a period of declining health.
She was born July 17, 1916, in Manila, Philippines, a beloved daughter of the late Dimas and Isabel Cairo Serrano.
She was a 1934 graduate of Mapa High School in Manila. She attended The University of the East, also in Manila, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.
Mrs. Vega was a very active and astute businesswoman. She owned and operated an appliance and office equipment company in Quezon City and was a longtime registrar at The University of the East.
As a homemaker, she enjoyed cooking, housekeeping, babysitting and daily prayer with her family. She is remembered as a lifelong true humanitarian to the sick and infirmed in the Philippines.
As a devout Catholic, Mrs. Vega was a member of the Order of the Carmelite Discalsed Secular. In honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, each year she would orchestrate a play/pageant around the Christmas season at Our Lady Queen of the Americas Church at Conneaut Lake and Queen of the Apostles Church in Alexandria, Va.
She was an active and faithful member of St. Patrick Church in Franklin. She also attended Queen of the Apostles Church in Alexandria as well as Our Lady Queen of the Americas Church at Conneaut Lake, where she formerly served as Eucharistic minister.
She was married to Celestino M. Vega, who preceded her in death on April 28, 1987.
She is survived by her children, Ramon Vega and his wife, Lucita, of Alexandria, Lutgarda Loper and her husband, John, of Salley, S.C., Isabelita Filamor and her husband, Angel Tito, of Centerville, Va., Eduardo Vega and his fiancée, Margarita Atilano, of Alexandria, and Maloy Shrout and her husband, Alan (Rick), of Oil City; in addition to 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her sister, Milagros Paredes of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two brothers, Mariano Serrano and his wife, Lolit, and Mario Serrano, all of Manila, Philippines; in addition to her loving nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
She will always be remembered as a loving, thoughtful and generous person.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jaime, Cesar, Jose, Roque, Salvador, Raymond, Carlos, Benjamin and Manuel Serrano; her grandson, Ramon Roderick; and her daughter-in-law, Eva Vega.
Friends may call Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk St., Franklin. A Christian wake service will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at noon at St. Patrick Church in Franklin, with Monsignor John J. Herbein, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment will follow in Our Lady Queen of the Americas Cemetery, Conneaut Lake, at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Vega’s family kindly requests that you remember her in your prayers or offer a Mass for the repose of her soul.
