ALLEGAN, Mich. —
Arthur Richard “Dick” Miller, 91, formerly of Meadville, passed peacefully into his eternal home on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at Ely Manor Nursing and Rehab Center in Allegan, Mich.
He was born in Meadville on April 20, 1921, to Arthur J. Miller and Mildred E. Sample Miller. He married Florence M. Buttray in 1948; she preceded him in death in 1995.
Dick was a U.S. Navy veteran who saw combat during World War II as part of what is now known as the Navy SEALs and was a member of the Golden Gloves. His cousin, Bob Miller, and he operated a cement block plant after returning state side. He also established the first automatic car wash in Meadville along with a soft ice cream stand at the same time. In 1959 he opened the Milk House, a family style restaurant with an ice cream parlor theme. Simultaneously he opened the first teen night club in the area. In 1965 he began mobile catering, the first in the area. In 1966 he started the Miller Vending Company which became the largest independently owned vending company in the surrounding three states. He retired in 1988.
He had fond memories of swimming and picnics at Presque Isle with his family.
He is survived by his son, Dr. Daniel (Rebecca) Miller of Bangor, Mich.; and daughters, Brenda Beck of Meadville and Christine (Howard) Jonas of Saegertown. He had six grandchildren, Janice Cauvel-Norrix (Gregory) of Portage, Mich., Danelle Nash of Mattawan, Mich., Ryan (Evelyn) Miller of Greensboro, N.C., Renee Love of Meadville, Adam Beck of New Jersey and Justin Beck. He was Great-Grandpa to eight great-grandchildren, Misti Jo, Alonnah, Gage, Abagail, Isaiah, Tyler, Janelle and Ryder.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Earl; daughter Karen; his loving wife; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa Ann Nash, Ridge Norrix and Baby Miller.
