MEADVILLE —
Anne Bowersox McLean, 84, formerly of Chautauqua, N.Y., and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since October 2010, died there Saturday, July 21, 2012.
She was born in Shrewsbury, Jan. 6, 1928, a daughter of George E. and Anna Hankey Bowersox Sr. She married the Rev. Norman McLean on June 9, 1950, and he survives.
She was a 1946 graduate of Leechburg High School and a 1950 graduate of Thiel College, Greenville, with a bachelor of arts degree in education. She worked as an assistant librarian at the Morris Plains (N.J.) Public Library while her husband was in the seminary. She then assisted her husband in the various churches he served in the Chautauqua region.
Anne was an avid knitter and had an amazing collection of camel figurines of all different shapes and sizes, inspired by her trip to Afghanistan in 1973. Since the mid-1940s Anne also worked during the season, first at the former Cary Hotel and then the Tally Ho Hotel at The Chautauqua Institution.
In addition to her husband, Norman, of 62 years, she is survived by a nephew, G. Edward Bowersox III of Somerset; two nieces, Marilyn Faris of Bryn Mawr and Marjorie Fiebinger of Vienna, Austria; a sister-in-law, Virginia Bowersox of Somerset; two great-nephews; three great-nieces, two great-great-nieces; and a great-great-nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Bowersox Jr. and Glen Bowersox; and a sister, Mary Whisler.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family suggests memorials be made to Thiel College, Office of College Advancement, 75 College Ave., Greenville, Pa. 16125.
