MEADVILLE —
Elizabeth Jane (Janie) Schaffner, 80, of Meadville, died on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at home following an extended illness.
Janie was born on Sept. 12, 1932, a daughter of Bernard and Irene Birckbichler. She was born in Butler.
She married Bernard P. Schaffner Jr. on June 25, 1955. Bernie was a loving, caring husband who waited on her every need.
He survives, along with daughters Roberta Smith and Rebecca Colburn, and a son, William Schaffner, all from Meadville.
She was preceded in death by her eldest son, Bernard P. Schaffner III, and her parents.
She was the oldest of seven siblings, a brother, Bernard Birckbichler of Titusville; a brother, William Birckbichler of Ohio; a sister, Carroll Hadley of South Carolina; and a sister, Mary Horstman of Slippery Rock. She also had two half brothers, Dennis Matson and Gary Matson, both of Butler.
She was a full-time housewife and mother and that was her main joy in life. She had a real passion for cooking for her family and friends and lit up every time someone complimented her on it. She also enjoyed music, bowling and spending time with her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Janie was well-known by everyone for her love of life, her sense of humor, her beautiful smile, and for being the greatest wife and mother anyone could ever hope to be. She loved the holidays and always being there for her family.
Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., with a prayer service at 8:45 p.m., at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home and Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Brigid Roman Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Johnathan Schmolt, pastor of St. Brigid’s, as celebrant.
Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
