MERCER —
Charles Edward Watkins, 85, of Mercer, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, at Jameson Hospital in New Castle.
He was born in Oil City on July 6, 1927, a son of the late Harry and Sylvia Frost Watkins.
He attended Meadville area schools and served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and was stationed in the Philippines for most of his tour.
He was employed as a steel worker for most of his life as a quality control inspector for oil field pipe at Youngstown Sheet and Tube. He was also employed at Montgomery College in Silver Springs, Md., for many years.
Upon his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife, frequently to Texas.
He enjoyed gardening, hunting and fishing — especially using his boat on Lake Erie and fishing for steelheads. He also enjoyed tinkering with woodwork.
In addition to his parents, he was proceded in death by four brothers, George M. Watkins, Harry Watkins Jr., Robert L.Watkins and Howard E. Watkins.
Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irene Cornielus Watkins, whom he married on April 3,1948, in Meadville. They had three children, daughter Diana M. Bell and husband, Frank, daughter Linda I. Kite and husband, Charles, and son Charles Edward Watkins and his wife, Rebecca Urey Watkins; three grandsons; four granddaughters; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be private per the wishes of the family.
