William R. Meeker

MEADVILLE — William R. Meeker, 89, formerly of Greenville, but was currently residing in Meadville with his niece, Cheryl Davern and her husband, Larry, passed away following a brief illness at 9:45 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2013, at Meadville Medical Center.

William was born in Greenville on June 20, 1923, to the late Albert and Josephine Bubeck Meeker.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a corporal with Battery B 557th Battalion. He was a machine gunner and sailed on the Queen Mary to Scotland into the Battle of the Bulge, and received the Good Conduct Medal, American Theatre Service Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theatre Service Medal with four Bronze Stars and Victory Medal. He later became a charter member of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville. He was an assistant superintendent at Greenville Steel Car where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1976. He was a member of Greenville American Legion Post 140, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 145, Italian Home Club and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374, all in Greenville.

He loved gardening and anything to do with nature, was an avid hunter and enjoyed his time spent at his hunting camp in Elk County for 35 years. He was known as a great reciter of poetry. He also enjoyed traveling to Kansas City to visit his brother.

William is survived by two brothers, Lewis Meeker and his wife, Joanna, of Tallmadge, Ohio, and Richard (Dick) Meeker of Greenville; a sister, Marie Riley of Greenville; and three generations of several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, John E. Meeker, Lawrence (Bud) Meeker, Charles Meeker, Albert (Abe) Meeker Jr. and Thomas Meeker; and two sisters, Mary Lucaric and Margaret Swinson.

All services are private. Burial will be held at Shenango Valley Cemetery in Greenville with full military honors being provided by Greenville VFW Honor Guard.

Memorial contributions can be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Penn Avenue and Clinton Street, Greenville, Pa. 16125; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
