Norma Jean Pankion Johns

GIRARD — Norma Jean Pankion Johns, 73, of Girard, passed from Earth far too soon and became her family’s angel in heaven everlasting on Monday, July 11, 2011, as a result of an automobile accident.

She was born Nov. 6, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio, the beloved daughter of the late Alex and Ann Wasiunyk Pankion, whom she loved dearly. Norma graduated from Conneaut Valley High School, where she met her life-long love and kindred spirit, Dan Johns.

She graduated from Edinboro University with a degree in art education. Norma, a gifted artist and teacher, taught art in the Cortland, N.Y., school system for several years while her husband completed veterinary medical school, started in private practice, served in the Army, then returned to private practice. Norma, a completely devoted and loving wife, assisted her husband in founding, running, and growing Fairview Veterinary Hospital into Erie’s premier veterinary hospital, including a referral dentistry practice, where she was instrumental in its operation in so many ways including caring for the employees and using her infinite gifts to guide one of her sons through veterinary medical school to join the family veterinary practice.

She was the best mother a child could ever hope to have, and her daily priority was caring for her husband and leading, and creating opportunities for her children and grandchildren to become caring and successful individuals. Teaching children to read, and reading to children, was very important to her.

As a member of the Girard United Methodist Church, she served for 37 years as a Sunday school teacher and art teacher for vacation Bible school, for which she received a lifetime achievement award. Educating children in art was a passion of hers. Norma’s hobbies included crafts, gardening, feeding hummingbirds and orioles, and canning/freezing fruits and vegetables from the family farm. Most of all in life she enjoyed spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

Norma is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Dr. Daniel Johns DVM; her daughter Kelly Johns Utstein and her husband, Dan; two sons, Dr. Scott Johns and his wife Sharon, and attorney Dann Johns and his wife Michele of York; her brother, Michael Pankion and his wife, Judy, of Cinninati, Ohio; eight grandchildren: Olivia, Erica, Natalie, Clarie, Nathan and Alex Johns, and David and Jacob Utstein; and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her dearest friends, Bruce and Linda Getz, and Bill and Bev Miller.

She was preceded to heaven by her father and mother, Alex and Ann Wasiunyk Pankion of Albion and Girard; and by her father-in-law and mother-in-law David H. and Olga Molebenski Johns of Springboro.

Friends may call at the Burton Funeral Home, 525 Main St. East, in Girard on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Norma’s celebration of life will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Girard United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darrell Greenawalt officiating. Burial will follow at Girard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Girard United Methodist Church, 48 Main St. East, Girard, Pa. 16417, for Children’s Education. Please send condolences at Burtonfuneralhome.com.
