Ralph Francis McAfoose

CHAMBERSBURG — Ralph Francis McAfoose, 88, of Chambersburg, formerly of Kittanning, died Friday, March 8, 2013, at Manor Care in Chambersburg.

He was born Dec. 8, 1924, in Kittanning, to Alonzo F. and Amelia Bargerstock McAfoose.

Ralph honorably served his country in the U.S. Army in 1943 and then served in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1944, stationed out of the Cleveland ports on the Great Lakes. Upon returning from the war, Ralph married Myrtle Iris Crawford on April 21, 1946.

Ralph was employed by PPG Industries as a glass manufacturer in the Ford City plant from 1950 to 1970. He was then transferred to the Meadville plant from 1970 to 1985 and later moved to Greencastle, where he lived with family and attended Grace Bible Church of Greencastle. He also attended Union Avenue Methodist Church of Kittanning.

Ralph enjoyed volunteering his time at Armstrong County Memorial Hospital as a Red Coat volunteer, working crossword puzzles, was an avid Steeler fan and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

His memory will be carried on with love by his daughters, Susan J. Gayman and husband, Lynn, of Greencastle, and Kay F. Phillips of Liverpool, N.Y.; son, John R. McAfoose and wife, Dina, of Sandy Lake; brother, Ray E. McAfoose, of Laguna Beach, Calif.; sisters, Mona McAfoose of Laguna Beach and Jane Griffith of LaVerne, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife of 53 years, Myrtle I. Crawford McAfoose, who died April 15, 2000; daughter, Barbara Jean McAfoose; an infant brother; and sister, Allene Ross.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 515 N. McKean St., Kittanning.

Additional visitation will be on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Thom Bonomo officiating.

Interment will be in Pleasant Union Cemetery, Cowanshannock Township.
